Our Story

Donald Bérubé was born entrepreneur with a passion for carpentry and stonework. Looking for a business opportunity that did not exist in the region, he plunged into the unknown and began producing granite countertops, funerary monuments, and accessories. His vision was correct: there was a strong demand from the outset. Granijem was thus born in 1988, operating out of a residential garage.

As demand for countertops grew, Bérubé hired two employees and later opened a better-equipped and more efficient processing plant on commercial premises.

However, Mr. Bérubé had his sights set even higher and aspired to acquire his own quarry, keen to bring the economic potential of granite mining to the Côte-Nord region. A year later, in 2003, Granijem opened its first quarry in Manic 3. Two additional quarries were soon purchased and became operational (Anticosti and Nordic Frost).

During peak mining seasons, the team employed ten workers.

In 2004, Luc (current President & CEO) joined his father to ensure the company’s continuity and to implement a technological shift. With business booming, a number of cutting-edge automated machines were acquired to further diversify operations and increase the company’s competitiveness.

Julie Bérubé joined the team in 2010 to manage the family business alongside her brother Luc. Having acquired a wealth of management experience in Western Canada and Ontario, she brought additional structure and standardization to the company’s marketing, customer service, and accounting departments.

To keep pace with market trends and to offer its clients innovative products, Granijem acquired a micro-percussion instrument allowing them to further personalize funerary monuments, memorials, and signs. Granijem also purchased a CNC machine to improve speed and precision in countertop production.

The company continued to expand and acquired a second building, bringing its total surface area to 5,000 sq. ft. This acquisition gave Granijem a larger space for its inventory of blocks and slabs, as well as the space needed to keep pace with growing client demand. A cable saw was also purchased as part of the expansion.

The Baie-Comeau-based company employed a team of 10 full-time staff and planned to continue expanding by developing new products and establishing major commercial partnerships.

Granijem became a proud partner of the BNQ 21000 cohort formed by the Manicouagan-Uapishka World Biosphere Reserve (RMBMU).

This project was directly in line with the government’s 2015–2020 sustainable development strategy, which encouraged voluntary action from both civil society and companies.

Granijem adhered to the comprehensive and renowned approach proposed by the RMBMU in order to effectively integrate sustainable development principles into the company’s decision-making process.

Granijem continues to expand and seek out new markets. It has acquired a 5-axis CNC saw to provide even greater speed, precision, and versatility. A new building has also been added to the existing site to store materials.
